So what is this rather mysterious looking dish? A few hints, because this is a tough one:
- It has something to do with my heritage
- It's what my daughter who is spending the year in the USA ate for Christmas Eve; I don't think it exists here in France
- It tastes a lot better than it looks

Some kind of sausage dish, I would guess.

It looks a lot like potato sausage, something at least my family often eats during the holidays....
Peppermint bark?
It does look like Spam. LOL. When my brother Jamie was just out of college he tried to begin a Spam Christmas custom at our house, just for the heck of it. Fortunately, it never caught on.
Well, Steve, you win the prize! Congratulations! It is the traditional Christmas Eve meal at my parents' home. Daphné discovered it this year and liked it a lot.
Is it some kind of sausages?
The color is a little browner than what I am used to (our is typically in the grey spectrum), but the little white chunks are pretty unmistakable. From where do they get it, and how do they prepare it?
My folks usually bake it in a Pyrex dish with 1/4" of water or so, and we typically have it for holiday breakfast with homemade cinnamon rolls.
I would never have guessed...
scrapple?
What is scrapple? I've heard of it but can't quite remember.
No, as mentioned in the comments above (but who reads all the comments on a blog?) it's Swedish potato sausage.
